How do I change my screen to a wide screen format?

I want to see the internet, ect. across the whole screen of my laptop, which is a 17 in. Is their a way to do this?How do I change my screen to a wide screen format?

Depending on how the website is designed you might not always be able to use the whole width of your screen (its just the way they designed it).
