How can I change the screen resolution on windows XP. I found where you can change it but the slider wont move?

I have also tried to troubleshoot with no help, it told me to click a button that was grayed out. In case it matters, I have a Dell computer and a Dell monitor. Thanks in advance! How can I change the screen resolution on windows XP. I found where you can change it but the slider wont move?
